On the 2nd September, Elaine and Clare competed in the Totley Exterminator. 16 miles of challenging navigation. Here’s how it went.
“I entered the Exterminator as I enter rather a lot of races – without really giving it much thought! That was way back in January. The start of a new running year – feeling enthusiastic about the year ahead and having seen it was part of the club league. All of a sudden it was the end of August and it was written there on the calendar. If it’s on the calendar, then it has to be done. I had all the usual excuses – been too hot to do any real training for quite a few months, been on a cycling holiday and cycled up loads of hills, achy legs……. I wasn’t even familiar with the route and when I went online to look at it, there didn’t really seem to be a route, only checkpoints that you had to somehow navigate between. Anyway, to cut a long story short Clare persuaded me that I should do it. The forecast was good, I could always walk round and have a nice day out.
I am so glad that I did it, what a fantastic event. The route is incredibly scenic, starting from Totley it goes up ( there’s a lot of up) to Higger Tor, then over to Stanage Edge, down to Hathersage, Millstone Edge, Padley Gorge, Longshaw Estate and then heads back to Totley. I would thoroughly recommend this event to anyone and everyone. Yes it may be 16miles long (if you don’t get lost) and 1000m of climbing but it is well worth it. I will certainly be putting it on my calendar for next year. A word of advice though if you do decide it’s up your street -check out the route you plan to do beforehand it will save you a lot of time on the day!! Elaine”
Elaine finished in 3 hrs and 46 mins, Clare in almost exactly 4 hrs.
