Report by Brian Clements

An indecisive me… “shall I? shan’t I? shall I? shan’t I?”   I text Mark Crawshaw (he’s done it before).  “Ricky’s is a good race – bout same as Ashover Fell Race (renamed ‘Lost Lad Fell Race’ – after you know who) maybe a bit easier – just take it steady”

Still battling with my ‘Doubting Thomas’ I receive a text from my old school buddy, Trevor from Belper. “Are you doing Ricky’s Race?”

“Of course, yes” I say!  So any lingering doubt was gone and it’s time to get ready.

The course, organised by MAC, was just shy of 4.5 miles while the conditions were muggy but bearable. Registration was at the Square and Compass pub at Darley bridge and the start took place 200 yards after the bridge. One large hill greets you at the beginning followed by an undulating course through some woods; a tad muddy in places (glad I wore my Innovates) with a few road sections, and then there is one final big sharp hill before heading back down to Darley Bridge. It was very enjoyable, I’m glad my ‘Doubting Thomas’ lost the battle!

The very experienced fell runner, Clare Eardley, was the only other member form the WRC tribe in attendance with many of the usual run crew absent due to summer holidays, work commitments and an inexplicable outbreak of knee injuries in the Bonsall area.  This Clatterway patient is recovering, reading OS maps of Derbyshire, none of which are stopping him lose his way to the bathroom, whilst further up the hill in Bonsall the injury may take a little longer to heal – a good dose of rest, I’m sure, will solve the problem.

Out of 201 runners:

Brian Clements came in 132 – 47.48

Clare Eardley came in 156 – 51.06

I highly recommend it for next year folks!
