Saturday morning started with brilliant blue skies and crisp frost underfoot as our Wirksworth runners assembled for the monthly cake run. Organised by Nicky, these are longer, away runs which end at a tea room for well-earned cake at the end. “Perfect winter running weather!” we all exclaimed as we prepared to set off.
We quickly realised that this was not to be, as we drove down Cromford Hill and descended into thick, freezing fog. Unusual for Wirksworth to be above the cloud and not in it!?
The second pitfall became clear as we arrived in Edensor and discovered the Tea Rooms were closed for maintenance! Not to be deterred, we quickly found an alternative solution (complete with roaring fire) and headed off on our run with thoughts of cake in our minds. What followed was a lovely 15km route over grass, trails and frozen mud, with plenty of chat and laughter along the way.

Coffee and cake (and fry ups, soups, chilli…) at Beeley tea rooms helped us defrost and refuel after.
