It was Long Eaton RC’s turn to host the latest Derby Runner BDL cross country event, held at Bramcote Hills Park on Sunday 15th of January.
What better way to kick start our year of running than tackling laps of a muddy field in the cold!
The week before had seen quite a bit of rain, so conditions underfoot were expected to be very muddy. And with such a changeable forecast, who knew what we’d expect on the day.
Intrepid souls representing WRC were; Glenn, Steve, Mark, Andy, Liz, Lewis, Dave, Denise, David and me.
It was a very chilly start, so the removal of warm layers was strategically delayed as long possible. Huddled like penguins on the start line, we awaited the starter’s orders.
What followed was a very enjoyable (retrospectively!) race. The course covered one small and two large laps consisting of firmer than expected grass, avoiding the odd low branch, threading through sandstone boulders, steep climbs and descents through woodlands and twisting single-track sections. So, plenty of interest to help distract from the efforts required. As always it was a great competitive and supportive atmosphere, surrounded by lots of people enjoying the park. What a great public space.
Great running to all our club participants. With special, well deserved, mentions going to Dave and Denise, both winning their respective age groups. Mark’s 4th in his age group. David’s overall 23rd. Plus a great result achieved by Andy. His 51st overall being his highest finish to date, showing the fruits of his recent efforts on Monday nights!
This leaves the final Winter BDL on the 19th of February, at Holmebrook Park, Chesterfield. Hopefully we can get another good club attendance so that WRC can finish this series in style. There has also been a rumour of post-run cakes, if that helps encourage you?
