Wirksworth’s Dave Spencer (pictured) and John Potter raced in the Darley Moor sprint duathlon this morning.

Dave Spencer has been training really well on and off the bike this year and is in excellent shape

The race had orginially been intended as a GBR Age-group qualifier before the COVID situation saw it ‘downgraded’ to a socailly distanced duathlon, and the quality of the field was very high due the athletes who had entered from all parts of the UK before this downgrade had taken place.  To give you an idea of this quality, of the 87 finishers, 12 athletes completed their opening 4.9km run in under 18 minutes!

All athletes had to negotiate a 4.9km run, an 18km bike and a 2.4km run on Darley Moor’s triangular race track.  As is often the case at this exposed venue, everyone was fighting a ferocious headwind on one side of the ‘triangle’.  To give you an idea of how ferocious, John’s cycling speed was 31km/h on this section yet 45km/h on the easier parts.

Dave and John both raced well, finishing in 55th (4th in Age Group) and 5th (2nd in Age Group) place respectively.
