Mud, glorious mud was the theme of this year’s Chaddesden Derby Runner BDL, which thirteen  members of Wirksworth set off to conquer.

The new lake water feature, located a short way into the run at the far end of the football fields, was an added surprise for the 256 runners taking part and did a great job of ensuring all runners’ feet were thoroughly soaked well before the four stream crossings – which for those uninitiated, are a built in ‘part and parcel’ feature of the Chaddesden park run.

Everyone managed to slip and slide their way around the sodden tracks, field and woodland and negotiate the course waterfeatures that collectively make up the Chaddesden route.

The reward for flogging around a 4.6 mile x-country course (and the reason most of us turned up on a damp November morning,) was the post run patisserie delights created by Kat and served up with lashings of hot tea and coffee.

A great performance was put on by all Wirksworth runners including two Chaddesden BDL debutant’s Richard and Helen. Helen secured a top ten place in her age category and Richard came in very respectably within the top 50 men. The fact that those five of us that also ran the same course last winter all ran notably slower times this year, is a testament to the challenging conditions.

Dave Brassington was first over the line for Wirksworth men and Kat Davey for the women’s team.
