Thought I’d drop a few lines to everyone following the Brassington hill race, a great event and well attended by around 200 runners, mostly young fit girls and boys clearly eager after the empty event calendar of the past 18 months, to take part in a ‘live’ fell race!
At 17 odd degrees and light overcast, it was reasonable running weather and felt really good to be taking part in in real hill race event again.
The course took in the same basic route as per previous years but included an extended section since the last one held in 2019, with a long and short option. Those that took the long option (the majority,) had to tackle the climb from the HPT to the trig point on the top of Harborough rocks, a gruelling section which contributed to the not insignificant 850ft of total ascent. Runners were rewarded of course by an amazing panarama from the top to catch a glimpse of before cantering down the other side and joining the track leading to the Longcliffe quarry, which we skirted around on a footpath to rejoin the HPT and the ‘old’ route.
In contrast to the heavy male/female ratio of race entrants, it was nice to see WRC bucking that trend. WRC members included Lewis Glover, Stef Brassington, Caroline Burrell, Clare Eardley, and Leonard Foulk.
As always, it was well organised by Alun, with support from our very own Elaine Stone, Paul Christmas plus the Brassington folks.
Chris and Dan Sleath were 2nd and 5th respectively.
