There were two major sporting events taking place on Wednesday 10th July. A football semi-final somewhere in Germany and Matlock Athletic Club’s Black Rocks Fell Race. The latter consisting of a super 10km+ race, which climbs 260m in total, and is made up of just about every terrain going; tarmaced road, flat gravel canal tow path, very steep trail (both up and down), rock -hopping technical footpaths and a rutted grass finish.

This differing terrain offers a great test of stamina, strength, pacing, bloody-mindedness, technical and speed descents, plus night vision to avoid stumbling under the dense tree canopies.

WRC enjoyed a good turn-out with six squad members from our club pitting their skills, hoping to score personal goals.

The route kicks off from Cromford Meadows and follows the canal. Knowing full well what’s coming, this fast flat section tests your tactics as the teams find their positions. At about third Incline height, the route peels off into the wings, with the continued ascent requiring good foot work. Reaching the Trig point signifies half time as your return descent takes precise corners down through the forest while you try to avoid toe-tripping free kicks. Taking encouragement from the race officials and cheering crowds (thanks WRC faithful) you give all you’ve got as you pass through the finishing tunnel, diving for the final whistle!

David “The Machine” Brassington was obviously very keen to get back to watch the footy, he finished in a fantastic 6th position. Special mention also goes to Graham Smith for his Age category win.
