A clammy Saturday afternoon saw 2 teams of Wirksworth Running Club members turn out for the annual Derwent River Relays hosted by Belper Harriers. It is a scenic, off-road, (nearly) 5km, 4-stage relay race along the footpaths of the River Derwent in Belper. Both teams were classified as ‘Super Vets’, which meant that not only were they super, but that their combined ages were 200 years plus. The Wirksworth Wanderers, made up of Stacy, Mark, Dave and Simon, finished in a fantastic combined time of 1:20:57, and found themselves in first place in their (niche) category and 16th overall. The Wirksworth Winged Warriors (who were re-named the Wirksworth Whingers by Mark), made up of Rachel H, Jo, Emma and Brian, finished in an admirable combined time of 1:47:21 and were 51st overall. 57 teams in all ran in the heat, all of them finishing their laps to a hearty applause. Thank you to Belper Harriers for a well-run and enjoyable event.
