A windy Sunday morning saw three Wirksworth athletes competing in a sizeable field at the Carsington 7+ race, probably the biggest race most of us have seen all year, with over 420 finishers. Having negotiated some understandably rigorous Covid-safe logistics, the field were launched onto the course in groups of 9 every 15 seconds or so, with those predicting the fastest times setting off first. All three of our runners significantly beat their predicted finishing positions, perhaps showing the need for a lot more optimism in their abilities! Stef Brassington (pictured) had an excellent run coming 12th in the senior ladies category in 1:02:45, while Paul Christmas and Mark Crawshaw dominated the MV50 category, coming 2nd and 5th in 48:55 and 52:19 respectively.  Although we were a bit sceptical about the practicality of safely managing this many runners at the moment, the logistics did seem to be pretty effective and most people seemed to feel safe enough. Maybe this gives us some hope that such races can continue through the coming months.
