Training

Regular Club Run – Wednesdays

We hold our main weekly training session as a club on Wednesday evenings. We meet from 6.45pm in Wirksworth Leisure Centre reception* to start our run at 7.00pm, and generally have two or three groups to cater for runners of different abilities, from novice to very experienced, and cover from 3 to 8 miles.

All runs, wherever possible, are off-road along the High Peak Trail, local hills and fields and footpaths. Whatever the route, it is guaranteed to be scenic! And on those dark winter evenings, we use quiet country lanes, running with head torches.

Wirksworth is a very sociable club and Wednesdays are a good chance to run and chat but also get some good exercise with people of similar ability. Within each group we always aim to keep fairly close together – nobody gets lost or left behind!

*Occasionally on Wednesday evenings in summer we run from other venues around the Peak District, and sometimes in winter we’ll run from Carsington. The Training Calendar (see below) shows when these Away Runs are planned but please contact us if you want to check where we are running from on any particular date.

Strength and Speed Training – Mondays

On Mondays, we have a rotating selection of workouts, comprising speed intervals, hill reps or a time trial. These sessions are suitable for all abilities as each is run at your own pace.

About twice per month, we do a speed interval session, usually on a flat section of the High Peak trail near Black Rocks or, in winter, one of the local back roads. The main aim is to get you used to going at a faster pace than usual, although over much shorter distances. These are really helpful sessions to improve strength and technique, even in longer races and also for those sprint finishes. Meet at 7.00pm at entrance to Black Rocks car park (summer) or Wirksworth Leisure Centre (winter).

Once per month, we do a hill reps session. In summer, this session is run on a section of the Incline near Middleton, and in winter we visit The Dale in Wirksworth. These sessions are excellent for improving strength and stamina. Meet at 7.00pm at entrance to Black Rocks car park (summer) or Wirksworth Leisure Centre (winter).

Finally, we do a 5 mile time trial once per month. This is done as an out-and-back route on the flat, run at your own pace, and aimed at showing your improvement during the year. It also helps to learn race pace, whatever that means for you. We operate a staggered start based on ability, aiming to get us all finishing at about the same time. In summer this session is run on a section of the Carsington Water circuit and in winter along the A6 between Cromford and Matlock, meeting at 7.00pm at the Sheepwash car park or by traffic lights on A6 at Cromford, respectively. Please bring a stopwatch to time yourself. The latest time trial performances are available here: Time Trial Results.

The Training Calendar shows the dates when each of these sessions is held.

Training Calendar and variations to the above

The Training Calendar shows the timing of each of these sessions as well as key races and other events of interest. We are fairly consistent in operating the above sessions but sometimes these do not take place (because of proximity to a key race, for example) or are changed at short notice or cancelled (usually when there’s lots of snow or ice around). In all cases, please contact us if you want to check where we are running from on any particular date.
